Guest Column: Kalpana

Now, it is one of our new initiatives to get a hold of local luminaries and/or members of the media to set about writing us a guest column so to speak. The credibility issues unfold both ways. In our first instalment, Ms. Kalpana, host of "Pesuvom" affirms and rebutts points that have already been thrown up in the air, diced with Ginsu knives and pounded in our "ammi"s. Still, late but not too late.

Vanakkam! This is Kalpana from the Talk Show “Pesuvom” which some of you may have seen on Vasantham Central. First of all, I have to thank the good folks of KLK who have given me the opportunity to be a part of this blog. I have to say that I am quite excited and more nervous, as I am not used to writing for many to witness.

When I was thinking about the 1st topic to write about, many things came to mind but why not start about the much talked about show where the subject matter was blogging.

I read the reviews written by the members of KLKillahs as well as the reviews that the topic generated.

Here are my thoughts.

Personally blogging is a great channel for many to express their thoughts. It is basically an online magazine that is updated everyday. However, I think we need to know the objective of such a blog or magazine. What are we trying to achieve? To be very honest, I am still lost at what is actually achieved by a blog.

1. The articles about the programmes and the personalities. Some of the panellists who appeared on the programme had mentioned that the comments on blogs must have been encouraging and not demeaning. Fair enough! But the moment we take the stage, we must be ready for criticisms, good or bad. If you cannot take the heat, Stay away from the media.

2. As for the criticism of programmes, yes, they have been harsh too. But I think, we as the Media folks have to take it positively and look forward to giving better programmes. I honestly feel it is time for a change. It is time for the “NO GUTS NO GLORY” kind of attitude to come in and completely turn around the Tamil Programmes of Singapore

3. Expletives. Great writers and great speakers reach out to the common man and woman. They stay away from expletives and I believe so should we. What is the point? What are we trying to achieve? It shows a lack of class and a lot more emotional instability. Yes, you have freedom of expression, but why not use it wisely.

4. People writing about themselves. I think it is a good channel to let out some angst. I do not see any other good in it. It is up to the people of course. It is not all about the other people knowing about lives, but about the perception we give them. Most of the tmr, the thoughts that are encouraged in their heads when they read such blogs is: Do we really need to go there? Of course our reply could be, “why do I care?”. The answer is then ”Why do you write if you do not care?”.

Blogging is cool and it reaches out to many. Why not make it positive? We can follow the examples of the National Enquirer, or the E Channel or other gossip magazines, or we can choose to model the better ones. Why do we do this?

For awareness or is it an outlet for us to express ?

Cheers
Kalpana

does it have to be constructive all the time? whatever happened to blogging for time pass.. its like advicing a group of teens sitting together in a grp laughing and joking to spend their time more wisely (e.g debating on current affairs)like duh! we'll do that wen the time or situation calls for it.. blogging may be a way to keep in touch with your friends, can be a chance for you to see yourself again from another time frame... to ask someone to blog for a constructive reason, is rather unfair. We have all the GP essays and reports and journal submissions to sch to do that... give us a break.. let us write for ourselves for once!

I see this blog as a grp of yg people throwing in their thoughts inspired by our daily lives... thoughts that many other youths amongst us share ... just because this blog has more readers than other blogs, it doesnt mean that it holds more responsibility. A blog is a blog regardless of the no. of readers...no doubt this blog could improve on its measure of language (which has been done!), sacarsm is its specility. The make and break. I'm pretty sure that this factor is the centre of the issue but my stand is that it stays just the way it is! thats just too bad, isnt it?

A blog is not exactly an online magazine that is updated everyday and there is no necessity to know the objective of a blog. A blog does not need to achieve anything. Perhaps the person who claimed to have written this article under the pseudonym 'Kalpana' has to stop trying to define something that can't be defined. A quick search on the net will explain the term quite elaborately and extensively. When you have figured out all myriad definitions and have come up with your own, keep us in the loop. Here are my comments to each one of his/her points.

1. 'The moment we take the stage we must be ready for criticisms, good or bad.' - I didn't know the show 'Pesuvom' went live on air. It was a badly recorded show with equally horrendous script lines. The 'arguments' were weak and badly timed. That's right, stay away from the media. Totally.

2. Criticisms were harsh? Perhaps we should think again. Giving better programs isn't always about doing something after someone shot you in the foot. With the kind of quality that was showcased, weren't the comments expected? I mean who are we trying to kid here? The media folks put up a mediocre show and expect fantabulous and constructive criticism? Please don't insult everyone's intelligence. Yeah, everyone honestly feels it's time for a change. The radical vision of "NO GUTS NO GLORY" will only come when the old bulls have been removed and new faces take the centre and backstage. In homeland, we hope that happens.

3. The concept of expletives has often been misunderstood. Have we become so narrow-minded to not accept the usage of such lingo? Just like how he/she mentioned that great writers and speakers reach out to the common man and woman, so do expletives. It has become commonplace. To ignore its presence is simply highlighting one's ignorance. No matter how much we try to evade profanities, they will surely find their way back home. Live with it rather than trying to come clean. I don't think it shows a lack of class and emotional instability. That is a downright judgement. When we're not perfect, why are we expecting perfection? The usage of expletives is often not targeted at anyone personally unless intended to, which is the blog writer's prerogative. These are words which are also used as a form of expression. Not lack of. How can one state that one has freedom of expression and yet expect one to adhere to certain restrictions? Contradicting.

4. Writing about oneself is not limited to letting out some angst. Everyone has their reasons for wanting to stroke their own ego. Whether you see a good in it is immaterial. Why this is even brought out in the open is hard to imagine. So is that all that one sees? Once again, we should not be narrow-minded. The ideology that the writer has formed here is disturbing.

Blogging is not cool. Blogging has become mundane. It was never negative in the first place for us to make it positive. We have to start shunning our stereotypes of such things and accept that diversity is what makes us human. Let us stop trying to make ourselves believe that we're living in a utopian society, for we are obviously not. There is absolutely no necessity to follow anything or model after anyone. That will definitely defeat the entire purpose of a blog. People blog because they want to and feel like it. We should not question ourselves as to why people do it. No one is answerable to anyone on this matter. In case the writer has forgotten, blogging is everywhere. Let us not disparage something which is theoretically an open concept because we are bound by homeland laws. Shows our lack of open-mindedness

On a side note, when one is trying to be subjective or objective on a topic of such grandeur, one has to show far more eloquence and not resign to such monstrosity. If the writer of the said article is offended at my comment, I rest my case on the integrity and authenticity of the writer's identity. Not that I believed anyway. Feel free to take it up with me if you wish. Oh, and please. Don’t sue me. Thanks.

I dun understand which Planet the Venereal One has descended from.. He/She has blabbered about in pretty decent english.. That is how i would describe the comment.. If it was one in the first place.

I for once, totally agree with What Kalpana said. A blog is pretty much LIKE an online magazine. They have many similarities in common. They reach out to a group of people with topics of interest.. They simulate thought with provoking questions.. And they do have a focus group of core readers whom they essentially cater to. Hence a blog is very much like an online magazine..

About the Venereal One's comment about the media.. I would suggest the person take a good look at the comment written before pressing the 'Publish your comment' button. The argument against Kalpana's points are so loosely glossed over and highly contradictory.. Dun argue for the sake of arguing mate..

And finally regarding the use of expletives.. I have to say that it is highly absurd to justify its usage in a blog just because it has become commonplace.. So what?? Are u trying to tell everyone that you converse with your parents in such lingo?? If you do, good for you.. But the majority of us dun, and we dun intend in acknowledging the use of expletives as appropriate.. Dun justify the injustifiable.. It just makes you look stupid and a incoherent rambler..

Finally, i would like to congratulate Kalpana on having written a well-thought of and interesting post.. Hope to see moe of ur posts..

kelingkia,

It saddens me that you've missed out many points in my comment above and have failed to understand them due to your seemingly hasty and vague 'must-get-back-at-this-fella' attitude. If you feel that I've not met your standards of compliance, I'm afraid nothing can and will be done about that. Since you've bluntly made personal attacks against my comment due to an obvious lack of comprehension, I am not going to explain myself here. The purpose of my comment was to highlight my personal views and welcome feedback. Not gibberish. Your comment has inevitably justified my usage of being narrow-minded. Thank you for your time.

P.S. Don't expect a reply if you're intending a repeat telecast.

I am rather amused and amazed at the little debate going on between kelingkia and the venereal one.

And once again, we open the can of worms also known as 'discussion about blogging'.

To be very honest, I'm really glad that I heard from Kalpana, the hostess of Pesuvom. I have in a previous article on this blog, not made very complimentary comments about her hosting abilities.

For this, I hope she takes into consideration that I was merely refering to that one episode.

Dear Venereal one, I must say you make a compelling arguement for the use to expletives, and have raised a valid point about it being a part of common vernacular. I agree that language should not be moralised.

That said, I find it a personal challenge to NOT use expletives. Saying the f word, or the b word limits one's language tremendously.

And yes, one can write good things about themselves, their friends, their families etc. In fact, that is exactly what I attempt to do with my own personal blog!

I do wish to raise your attention to your second paragraph. A brilliantly written piece to stroke the emotion as the case were.

However, I find myself rather saddened by your use of general and sweeping statements in the paragraph. But please, I'm not saying you're right or wrong. IN fact, I believe you are well within your rights to feel that way, just as I am withing my rights to feel that your point is flawed.

And Kelingkia, well you seem to be full of support for Kalpana. Good for you! Your little description of The Venereal One was amusing, and a little alarming. Does that mean I'm going to be accused of spewing virtual vaandhi as well some time in the future? ;)

Mystikal, let me buy you a kahlua coffee. It might wake you up! :p

deviousdiv,

Very often, we try to be someone we are not. This happens subconsciously and is common among people to not accept it. Since we're generally cultured to be nice people, we shun at the usage and/or EXCESSIVE usage of expletives by others. Yet we (minus the uber good people) do the same darn thing. Why? Simply because it exists. Instead of trying to portray oneself as the ultimate decent human who knows not expletives, I'd counter propose we use it when needed. No further explanations required here, I hope. Everything has a purpose or should have one. If expletives didn't exist, we wouldn't even be discussing about it now, would we? When you think about it, expletives are no different from other words. Part of the whole good, bad and ugly concept. It is us, the people, who have given these words their 'negative' definitions. To counter this, we have our own street lingo to make these words acceptable. Yet we (plus the uber good people) complain about them. So who should we really blame here? No one but ourselves. We create, we destroy and we create again. Endless cycle. I'm starting to sound like a pro-activist for the usage of expletives.

If I hadn't said such things in my previous entries, you wouldn't have had a reason to notice the flaw. I'm not one to judge, quickly or otherwise. Especially someone online. I know I was neither right nor wrong. Precisely my point. You didn't have to seem so defensive about it, you know. I wasn't going to kill you anyway. My words were injected with a purpose. I believe you should see where I'm going with this. If you don't, while you're getting a kahlua coffee for Mystikal, get me a nasi goreng puteh ikan bilis mata lembu and teh cino. We can yak after that.

Lastly, thank you for your comments. Cheerio.
